Article (5 Minutes) -How to Overcome Stress by Seeing Other People’s Joy by Kelly McGonigal: When we spend time around stressed out people we may feel like their stress is contagious. Over time this may lead us to retreat into our psychological hazmat suits and cut ourselves off from these people. It’s a common approach recommended by health care and social work professionals, however, what if the answer wasn’t to retreat, but to counterintuitively double down on empathy? In this article, Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University, details how you can make stress your friend by increasing your positive empathy and learning how to “catch” joy.
Quick Tip - Delete Your Browser Autocomplete to Regain Focus: Find yourself compulsively checking social media sites or any website for that matter? Make it harder for yourself. Odds are you have a prediction setting enabled in your browser, meaning if you simply type the letter “F” into your browser, it takes you to Facebook, “R” for reddit, and so on. As many news sites and social media sites rely on the slot machine effect (engineering their sites to make it as highly addictive as possible to keep your attention), simply NOT going there in the first place is a huge win as it removes the addictive trigger. If you are using Chrome, follow these instructions (or google search for the browser you currently use):
Use (cmd + shift + delete or similar) to clear your browsing history / cookies.
Go to the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar (the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner)
Click Show advanced settings (on the bottom)
In the Privacy section, deselect the "Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar" checkbox.
Book - Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, translated by Stephen Mitchell:One of the most recommended books on Tim Ferriss’ podcast, Tao Te Ching expands beyond religion to offer a great manual on the art of living. Beautiful and simple, you can keep this book on your coffee table or nightstand to pick up and reference anytime. Stephen Mitchell’s acclaimed translation is accompanied by ancient Chinese paintings that beautifully reflect Lao Tzu’s timeless words.
